The 4 Beaches That Will Make You Fall in Love with Kefalonia – DOWNLOAD THE EBOOK

Kalamia Beach

Kalamia Beach
Driving along the “Fanari Road”, the road that connects Lassi to the capital Argostoli, and looking down towards the sea, you can see a not very large beach.

The sand is white, the water crystal clear, and a small promontory features natural caves.

It is Kalamia beach and at first sight it appears quite inviting.

We decide to go down and experience it for a day.

We are located in the southern area of Kefalonia and more precisely on the edge of the tourist village of Lassi, famous above all for the beautiful beaches of Makris and Platis Gialos.

After parking the car and walking along a short, easy path, we arrive at the beach.

The first thing we notice is the tranquility and almost total silence, yet it is August and it is almost midday and there are people there, not many, but they are there.

Then, inevitably, we observe the sand, almost white and very fine.

Kalamia is a beach that is neither long nor deep, enclosed between two headlands, large enough to accommodate two rows of umbrellas and their accompanying sunbeds, one close to the shoreline and one closer to the headland that rises behind it, let's say forty or so spots.

In short, it's really nice.

It's true, there are a couple of rather large boats anchored further out, but all in all they don't cause much of a nuisance..

But what most attracts our attention, and it couldn't be otherwise, is the crystal clear water that laps the beach.

The view that opens up before our eyes is equally as impressive: looking to the left, small caves and tunnels characterize the promontory.

The approach couldn't have been better.

We quickly ditch our beach gear and, equipped with masks and fins, swim to discover what this stretch of sea has in store for us.

We are amazed by the variety of fish, large and small, that populate the seabed, and once we reach the caves, we are eager to enter to discover how incredibly transparent the water is and how fresh and pleasant the natural environment is.

But the surprises don't end here..

We go to our station and after the regular post-swim break, we realize that we feel the almost clear dominance of the English language.

So many English people in August? That's the first thing we wonder.

Not that we mind, on the contrary, but that's the way it is..

Having a pleasant chat with some English tourists, we learned that Kalamia is their favorite beach and we also understood the reason for the silence that reigns on the beach.

In fact, the presence of Italians on this stretch of coast is decidedly lower and it's well known that we are terrible chatterboxes..

It is also true that during the afternoon hours, the public that gathers in the small Beach Bar located to the left of the beach, gives vent to their repressed cravings to listen to 80s music, even at a good volume.

This is still nice though!

As usual, we wish the day would never end.

You never tire of gazing at the beach, the sea, and being immersed in the natural landscape that Kefalonia offers us.

At dusk Kalamia becomes even more fascinating.

The umbrellas close, the bathers leave, some swaying from the weight of a day spent in the sun and the sea, the boy runs a brush over the sunbeds and arranges them so they're ready for tomorrow and at a certain point we too pack up and head home.

This evening we're going to eat Moussaka at Milos!!
