The red beach of Xi and the center of Lixouri are located in the western area of Kefalonia, more precisely in the Paliki region, a strip of land that juts out into the sea towards the west from the central body of Kefalonia.
It is a peninsula made up of particularly clayey soil that has favored a predominantly agricultural economy since the past.
Built near the ancient city of Paliokastro and in the least mountainous area of Kefalonia, Lixouri is the second largest city on the island after the capital Argostoli.
Almost completely destroyed by the 1953 earthquake, it was rebuilt in the most traditional building style of the island with wide pedestrian avenues and a pretty central square, around which most of Lixouri.
Like other towns on the island, it is also inhabited in the winter months and is therefore equipped with all kinds of services. Furthermore, from the port of Lixouri it is possible to reach Argostoli via a small ferry that departs approximately every 40 minutes and the crossing takes approximately 20 minutes.
It is also worth highlighting the cultural commitment of this center to the Pali Philharmonic School, one of the most important in Greece, which has its headquarters right here.
But the real peculiarity found in this region is given by the fact that the rocks in the areas close to the sea are almost entirely made of clay, which is why the beaches take on a completely red color.
It follows that the contrast between the particular color of the sand and the transparency of the sea is something truly exceptional to behold.
Xi Red Beach and its unique features
The most famous beach in this stretch of sea is undoubtedly the red beach of Xi, a name that represents the same letter of the Greek alphabet as the shape of the beach resembles that letter.
The beach is very long, with fine sand and a seabed that slopes very, very gently towards the open sea, making it ideal for those planning a holiday in Kefalonia with children.
Xi Bay is divided into two parts, one wilder and therefore quieter, and one more touristy and therefore equipped with umbrellas, sunbeds and a few traditional taverns.
It is worth remembering that right in front of Xi beach you can observe the Kounopetra, that is, the large and almost completely flat rock formation, which until the 1953 earthquake, moved rhythmically from east to west before finally stabilizing.
Between Lixouri and Xi there is another very interesting stretch of coast, fully free and accessible but not equipped, where Lepeda beach.
Frequented by both tourists and locals, this beach also boasts a beautiful, deep beach of fine, completely red sand, which has the advantage of being significantly less crowded than Xi.
At the beginning of this beach, a particularly evocative scene is created by rock formations located on the seashore, bordering a small bay.
