The village of Poros is located in the Pronnoi region, in the southeastern part of Kefalonia.
This region is characterized by dense Mediterranean vegetation, gorges and natural springs, hills, and white pebble beaches.It is a small, compact village with a population of approximately 1,100, located about 40 km from the capital Argostoli, to which it is connected by a daily bus service.
Its main feature is that it has a transparent blue sea in front of it and the Atros mountain , rich in vegetation, behind it.
The town of Poros offers a truly fascinating setting, with the landscape perfectly blending the crystal-clear sea and the greenery of the trees.
Poros was, in the late 1980s, one of the first centers on the island of Kefalonia to optimally develop group tourism and still today attracts many families and young couples from all over Europe.
This is mainly due to the fact that Poros has a well-equipped port, so much so that it is the only place in the whole of Kefalonia that allows for a regular ferry line connecting the island to Kyllini in the Peloponnese.
There are two main beaches, both with white pebbles and a beautiful sea.
1. To the south, the coast forms two coves: in the first is the port area and in the second, more secluded, is the first beach of Poros, equipped with a small pier and a large square behind it.
2. To the north, however, lies the second beach of Poros, a little wilder, not very deep but much longer than the first and less frequented, here you can fully enjoy the splendid scenery offered by the stupendous sea and the mountain behind it.
This beach, in addition to being equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas along some stretches, also offers many tourist services such as shops, bars, and taverns where you can enjoy excellent fresh fish dishes.
Some interesting historical notes.
Although it is a simple village, the town of Poros also offers some noteworthy cultural attractions.
For those who want to enjoy an excellent view of the town, the coast and the sea, we recommend going to see the Monastery of Atros, located on the mountain behind Poros.
It is the oldest monastery on the island and dates back to 1264.
Located approximately 550 meters above sea level, the monastery can be reached via a dirt road that starts from the village of Riva and continues for more than 4 km.
It is not an easy road and it is recommended to use a Jeep-type vehicle, but it is wonderful for admiring Poros and the surrounding vegetation from above.
The monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times, so much so that today only the entrance courtyard and the 10-meter-high medieval tower remain to be admired.
Just over 1 km from Poros, near Tzannata, there is an ancient Mycenaean tomb discovered between 1992 and 1994.
Based on the findings, it was possible to ascertain that this area was inhabited by man since ancient times.
It is the largest and best preserved tomb of all those discovered on the island of Kefalonia.
With a diameter of 6.8 metres and a height of 3.95 metres, it was built on top of a previous, smaller tomb which collapsed for unknown reasons in 1350 BC.
In fact, you can still see the stones from the previous tomb incorporated into the current one.
Inside, several urns dating back to the 12th century BC were found, as well as some ceramic objects, jewels and representations.
Near this tomb, during excavations, an ossuary was found, containing the bones of 72 men.
Leaving the village of Poros, heading towards Argostoli, the road leads to a narrow path between the rocks, where, according to mythology, Hercules passed, leaving large cavities in the sides of the rocks with his feet.
The town of Poros offers a welcoming and tranquil atmosphere, and for this reason it is mostly frequented by couples and families with children.
It has a splendid square overlooking the sea, very busy in the evening, where you can dine enjoying typical Greek dishes based on grilled meat, fish and vegetables.
